From John Nolte at Breitbart.
How doornail dead is the left-wing Newsweek? How over, how buried, how room temperature, how worm-food, liquidated, snuffed out, toes up, terminated, bucket-kicked is Newsweek? So dead all the owners and publishers have to grab attention is to troll nothing less than the POW/MIA flag. And as racist, no less.
……What matters isn’t the left-wing lunacy that would float such an idea, what matters is the subtext — what Newsweek’s attack on an iconic symbol designed specifically to honor those who must never be forgotten really means.
What it means is that at long last Newsweek is over. It means that whoever bought the left-wing propaganda rag for $1 got hoodwinked.
At long last, Newsweek is finally out of our misery.
And the fact that Newsweek doesn’t know it is dead yet, only makes the victory all the sweeter.
P.S. For those wondering, the Newsweek columnist considers the POW/MIA flag racist because of Nixon, or something. The column is about 1600 words long and never really explains its own premise.
Doornail dead, America.
More from Sean Davis at The Federalist:
It’s Tuesday, so you know what that means: it’s time to get outraged about something stupid and inconsequential.
Here to help us with the online outrage du jour is Newsweek, a dated news magazine that used to be leafed through by people while they waited to see their dentist. Founded in 1933, it was a big deal up until that whole Internet thing happened. After that, it faded away into irrelevance before being sold for $1 to Sidney Harman, a wealthy and politically connected nonagenarian, who then dumped it on Tina Brown and Barry Diller, who then dumped it on International Business Times after spending the better part of a year trying to get rid of the cash-hemorrhaging operation.
……When he sees the POW-MIA flag, Newsweek writer-cum-Salon commenter Rick Perlstein is not reminded of American servicemen and women captured and tortured by foreign enemies. No, he’s reminded of how racist America is:
“You know that racist flag? The one that supposedly honors history but actually spreads a pernicious myth? And is useful only to venal right-wing politicians who wish to exploit hatred by calling it heritage? It’s past time to pull it down.
Oh, wait. You thought I was referring to the Confederate flag. Actually, I’m talking about the POW/MIA flag.
I told the story in the first chapter of my 2014 book The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan: how Richard Nixon invented the cult of the “POW/MIA” in order to justify the carnage in Vietnam in a way that rendered the United States as its sole victim.”
Notice how Perlstein engages in shameless self-promotion of his cheesy ‘book’ while trashing the memory of American service members who were POWs and those who are still missing and unaccounted for. It takes a unique kind of douchebag to equate POWs and MIAs with a “cult”. But that’s what passes for ‘cutting edge journalism’.
That damned flag: It’s a shroud. It smothers the complexity, the reality, of what really happened in Vietnam.
The aftermath of our withdrawal was pretty fucking complex too. The Khmer Rouge came through and slaughtered at least 2 million people, and Vietnam is now ruled by a communist totalitarian regime with an abysmal human rights record. The gulag Vietnam has become is something we fought to prevent.
Fuck Newsweek. Its death rattle is a welcome occasion.
