Another “lone wolf” with a world-wide network of like-minded zealots.
From ABC News.
The FBI Wednesday arrested an Ohio man for allegedly plotting an ISIS-inspired attack on the U.S. Capitol, where he hoped to set off a series of bombs aimed at lawmakers, whom he allegedly considered enemies.
Christopher Lee Cornell, 20, of Green Township, was arrested on charges of attempting to kill a U.S. government official, authorities said.
According to government documents, he allegedly planned to detonate pipe bombs at the national landmark and open fire on any employees and officials fleeing after the explosions.
The FBI first noticed Cornell several months ago after an informant notified the agency that Cornell was allegedly voicing support for violent “jihad” on Twitter accounts under the alias “Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah,” according to charging documents. In addition, Cornell allegedly posted statements, videos and other content expressing support for ISIS — the brutal terror group also known as ISIL — that is wreaking havoc in Iraq and Syria.
“I believe that we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks and everything,” Cornell allegedly wrote in an online message to the informant in August, according to the FBI. “I believe we should meet up and make our own group in alliance with the Islamic State here and plan operations ourselves.”
In the message, Cornell said that such attacks “already got a thumbs up” from radical cleric Anwar Awlaki “before his martyrdom.”
Evidently, his parents didn’t think it strange that their son, who “loved video games and was best friends with the family cat” suddenly became an Islamic convert and expressed sympathy for muzzies in the Middle East:
John Cornell Sr., Cornell’s father….said he noticed his son praying about two months ago. “He might be 20, but he was more like a 16-year-old kid who never left the house,” Cornell Sr. said.
……”He said, ‘Dad, you just have to let people believe in what they believe. I have my beliefs, and you just have to let people believe what they believe in,'” Cornell Sr. said.
Seriously???? You didn’t raise some hell over your son’s attraction to a violent theocracy hellbent on killing as many Westerners, Christians, Jews, and infidels as possible in the name of their religion?
Cornell Sr. is steeped in denial:
Cornell Sr. said he thinks FBI agents followed his son around and “set him up.”
“I believe he was really vulnerable,” he said. “I believe he was coerced in a lot of ways.”
Cornell left his father a note Tuesday night that stated he left to stay with a friend. Cornell Sr. said he believes his son’s “friend” was the FBI informant.
“I think that was the FBI that he had been corresponding with all the time,” Cornell Sr. said. “I think they could have arrested him then. If he was making plots or whatever, I think they should have arrested him then. I’m surprised they didn’t kill him.”
Oh yeah, the FBI set him up. They coerced the little shitbag into converting to Islam, posted the threats on his Facebook page in his name, planted the idea for a terrorist attack in his head, followed him around and waited for the perfect moment to pounce. I’m disappointed that they didn’t have to kill him.
Cornell Sr. is a fucking moron.
